Using Purple on web pages

Colour can have a psychological effect on a viewer.

Some cultures use colours for specific inferences: for example, purple

Purple is perceived to be royal, regal.

This stems from the fact that long ago the dyes needed to produce purple were so rare that only kings could have them.

  • Can be very 'dark', moody.
  • Tints are 'lighter' — lilac, mauve, lavender, jacaranda.
  • Can be aristocratic, elegant.
  • Can be feminine, romantic in its lighter values.

Symbolism of purple:

  • Passion, imagination, sensitivity, magic, mysticism, mystery, mourning, romance
  • In Thailand purple is the colour of mourning
  • A room painted purple (tints) is said to be calming, soothing. Also tends to boost creativity.
  • The Purple Heart is an American award for bravery.
  • The kings and queens of Europe wear purple robes. Bishops (royalty of the church) also.
